Founded in 1992, the Gunston Wrestling Club has a long and storied history of developing wrestlers in Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C., metro area. In recent years, the club has won numerous Virginia state freestyle and Greco-Roman titles, and produced USA Wrestling High School All-Americans, state champions, and state placers—many of whom have gone on to wrestle at the collegiate level.
1992: Founded by former Mt. Vernon coach John Fredricks, the club's practices initially rotated among several high schools, including Mt. Vernon, West Potomac, Edison, and Lee.
1994: Coach Roy Hill took the helm, expanding practice locations to include West Springfield and Hayfield. His leadership helped establish Gunston as a prominent wrestling club in the region.
1996: Coach Gary Dennis founded the Hayfield Junior Hawks youth program and joined the Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation (NVWF). He coached the program for over 20 years, introducing hundreds of kids to the sport and helping to produce numerous high school champions, state qualifiers, and medalists.
2021-Present: Coach Tomas Ovalle, a member of Coach Dennis's inaugural 1996 team, took over the Junior Hawks youth program and rebranded it as the Gunston Junior Wrestling Club. Coach Ovalle continues the work and mission set by those before him, helping to develop a new generation of wrestlers.
